12 Custom Round White Coffee Tables (Metal Base & Wood Top)

This case study documents the end-to-end production process for a specific client order: 12 Round Coffee Tables featuring a precision Laser Cut Metal Base and a Solid Wood Top. The order consisted of two size specifications: 6 large tables (80cm in diameter) and 6 small tables (40cm in diameter).

Custom Round White Coffee Tables (Metal Base & Wood Top)

1. Design & DXF File Optimization

The client provided only JPG images of the desired coffee table patterns. Our first and most critical step was to convert these aesthetic designs into manufacturing-ready digital files, a process crucial for DXF File Optimization.

Using CorelDRAW, we created the vector patterns required for the circular metal base. The metal sheet length corresponds to π times Diameter.

Two distinct vector patterns are shown, corresponding to the expanded flat patterns for the large (80cm in diameter) and small (40cm in diameter) circular metal bases. We specified a metal thickness of 1.5mm to ensure the final table frame is robust and solid.

The second step involved material preparation. We utilized the optimized vector files to direct the laser cutter, cutting the necessary rectangular sheets for the table bases.

The raw metal sheets, cut to the required rectangular shapes with a thickness of 1.5mm, are now ready for the forming process.


2. Metal Base Fabrication: Rolling, Welding, and Grinding

This section details the transformation of the flat metal sheets into the stable, cylindrical metal bases.

Forming the Cylinders

We prepared several 6-meter long, 20mm × 20mm square metal tubes. A specialized Rolling Machine was then used to form:

  • 6 circular rings with a diameter of 40cm
  • 6 circular rings with a diameter of 80cm.

Precision Bending and Welding

Next, the laser-cut rectangular patterned sheets were carefully bent along their length, starting from the left side, mimicking the process of rolling a sheet of paper into a tube.

Quality Control Note: The bending must apply uniform and continuous force without sudden impacts, preventing the 1.5mm metal sheet from developing creases or structural weak points.

Once the two ends of the sheet met, they were welded together to form an initial metal cylinder.

The patterned metal cylinder is placed onto the pre-rolled square tube ring for final alignment and reinforcement welding.

Because the 1.5mm plate requires substantial heat fusion, the welding machine parameters were adjusted to a higher temperature. This ensured a strong, integral bond between the patterned cylinder and the reinforcing ring.

Note the large, robust welding points, which are necessary to achieve optimal fusion and structural integrity for the heavy-duty base.

Finishing the Metal Base

The final steps for the metal base involved surface refinement:

Grinding: All large welding points were manually ground and sanded to achieve a smooth, flush surface, ready for coating.

Coating: The customer requested a white finish. We applied a High-Temperature Powder Coating (often referred to as oven baking paint), which offers superior adhesion and chip resistance compared to conventional liquid paint.

3. Solid Wood Top Production & Coating

The table tops required 2cm thick solid wood construction.

Polishing and Critical Dust Cleaning

Before coating, the wooden tops needed extensive polishing (sanding) to achieve a smooth finish. This process generates significant wood dust.

Critical Quality Step: All residual dust and fine particles must be thoroughly cleaned from the surface. Failure to do so would result in the finished top having a rough, granular texture when touched—a sign of unprofessional finishing.

Wood Coating (A Different Process)

The wood top also received a white coating, but the application process is fundamentally different from metal powder coating:

  • Method: Room-Temperature Spray Painting (Liquid paint).
  • Curing: The wooden pieces are typically air-dried in a ventilated area, requiring up to 72 hours to fully cure and achieve maximum hardness.

Important Observation: Despite both components being specified as "White," the final color of the wood top and the metal base are visually different due to:

  1. The difference in base material (Metal vs. Wood).
  2. The different coating materials used.
  3. The difference in application process (High-Temperature Powder vs. Room-Temperature Spray).

4. Final Assembly and External Wooden Crating

Assembly

The coated wood top was mounted onto the metal base. The metal base was designed with pre-drilled assembly holes for easy installation. The top was secured using self-tapping screws through these holes.

Professional Packaging for Global Shipping

For safe transportation, each finished coffee table was first wrapped in bubble wrap and placed inside a cardboard carton.

Shipping Protection: To prevent crushing and damage during logistics, especially for large furniture items, we provide External Wooden Frame Reinforcement (or Wooden Crating) around the outside of the carton.
